ok, so santa barbara gift baskets has been getting kind of crazy the last couple of months and i know there is always lots of curiosity when local businesses do seemingly odd things, so i wanted to tell you the real story of our move and then our other move. the shop has been located in victoria court for over 20 years tucked in the back next to the little post office. the past couple of years, our little court has seen many changes, with the closing of video schmideo, cafe bianco, glow salon, due maternity (still open online- http://www.duematernity.com), well heeled footwear, maly’s (gosh, i did not mean for this to be such a depressing post). . .anyways, we became a little bit lonely in the back and were presented with a wonderful opportunity to use the state street space in the front of the property where due maternity had been-the space with the gorgeous brick wall! well, we jumped at the chance-partly because of that gorgeous wall and partly because, like everyone, our shop was REALLY feeling the weak economy, with much of our corporate business coming to a halt and just the fact that we all are spending a bit less these days. . . we thought that the state street frontage would greatly increase our walk in traffic and the community’s awareness of us! and it seemed to. but, we ran into a little problem. basically the space does not have a restroom and because we sell prepackaged foods, we qualify as a “food facility” and when you are a food facility the health department says that you must have a restroom within your walls. we tried our hardest to get an exemption, but the health department was not able to do so,even though they did see that the rule seemed to not apply to us-so we ended up needing to keep the back location open for pick ups since it was “legal” and basically juggled the two spots to be able to stay up front for the holiday. . .so, after a great little stint of being up with the big boys and girls on state street, we have moved back. but, no regrets. it was exciting to be out front for the holidays and i do feel that some of the community who never knew we had been hiding in the back for over 20 years have discovered us now. on one of our first days back, one of our customers came in and send “welcome home”. and that is how it feels, like we are back home. we freshened up the shop with paint and a few other things. and the courtyard is looking up. we now have a great little organic children’s and women’s clothing store called two owls which is located right at the bottom of the stairs to soho, punch interiors is opening up front with great antiques and swanky gifts and their tenant improvements are looking very fun, can’t wait to explore, next door to us, i believe, a pizza, casual italian spot is going to open up soon, and of course, we still have natasha’s great women’s boutique, blue lobster cottage, centerpoint pilates, the herbal spirit, bouchon, olio, arigato, and more-so, come and take a little trip up to the 1200 block of state and be sure to make it to the back to see us at santa barbara gift baskets-take a look around our cozy little shop or use our front patio to relax and enjoy the view for a bit.
